Duties and Responsibilities

The Automation Engineer or Technologist will perform a variation of the following duties, depending on operational needs, customer needs, and project requirements:  Design control systems for industrial applications

•          Design control system changes to existing systems as needed

•          Write technical documentation to support design activities and document work plans and work performed

•         Design software systems for industrial applications

     ·   Design software system changes to existing systems as needed

•          Document software designs on a suitable platform
•          Create automation programming for PLC, HMI, Historian, VFD, PC, and other automation systems that may be required
•          Create code for database solutions and other information technology platforms
•          Perform FAT testing in the office or at the client site to a documented test plan
•          Perform commissioning services at the client site as needed as per the commissioning schedule which will require work to be completed after hours, on weekends, and on statutory holidays from time to time
•          Communicate effectively with the client about project progress in a manner that is consistent with the project goals and QCA’s best interest
•          Travel to client sites in other cities to perform work as required
•          Manage time allocations for tasks efficiently, meet deadlines for tasks as needed, and give feedback to project managers
•          Provide time estimates to management for work that will be performed
•       Enter work hours and comments into the timesheet program every week, on time, as per management deadlines 

        Qualifications

•       Degree in Electrical, Computer, or Mechatronics Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution, or Diploma in Automation or equivalent from a Technical Institute.
•       5 to 7 years of relevant work experience.
•       Membership with EGBC as a P.Eng. is preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities

Junior Level (Engineer in Training - EIT / Electrical Technologist - AScT Eligible)

At this level, candidates will focus on learning and supporting projects with close supervision.

• Assist in EIC engineering and design for greenfield and existing industrial applications.
• Develop electrical schematics, panel layouts, and BOMs for control panels under guidance.
• Use AutoCAD Electrical and/or EPLAN to create and modify design drawings.
• Support the development of I/O drawings from spreadsheets and basic AC/DC circuit designs.
• Participate in FAT testing and inspect electrical components under supervision.
• Assist in commissioning activities at client sites.
• Learn and apply industry standards (UL508A, CEC) and company practices.
• Collaborate with senior engineers and project teams to gain hands-on experience.
• Ensure compliance with company and client standards.

Intermediate Level (P.Eng. Eligible / AScT - Electrical Engineering Technologist)

At this level, candidates are expected to work more independently, handle more complex tasks, and contribute to project management. In addition to Junior Level responsibilities, they will:

• Design electrical and control systems for industrial applications with minimal supervision.
• Develop network topology drawings and safety architecture designs.
• Perform power system analysis, including circuit breaker sizing, load calculations, and lighting design.
• Work with EPLAN and AutoCAD Electrical to produce detailed design drawings.
• Independently oversee FAT testing and inspect electrical components before and after installation.
• Provide commissioning support at client sites, including supervision of contractors.
• Manage project tasks, ensuring timely completion and adherence to quality standards.
• Communicate project updates effectively with clients and internal teams.
• Review and interpret specifications, ensuring compliance with industry codes and standards.
• Participate in mentoring junior engineers and technologists, offering guidance and technical support.

Senior Level (P.Eng. Required / Senior Technologist - AScT)

At this level, candidates are expected to be fully independent and assume design responsibility of projects, mentor teams, and contribute to strategic planning. In addition to Junior and Intermediate Level responsibilities, they will:

• Be involved in EIC engineering and design efforts for complex industrial projects.
• Develop and review engineering deliverables, including single-line diagrams, power and control schematics, and grounding layouts.
• Conduct power studies using ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower (load flow, short circuit, coordination studies, arc flash analysis).
• Specify and approve electrical equipment, including transformers, switchgear, and VFDs.
• Oversee vendor documentation review, factory acceptance testing (FAT), and site commissioning.
• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior and intermediate engineers and technologists.
• Support business development efforts by preparing estimates and proposals.
• Interface with utilities and regulatory bodies as required.
• Participate in strategic decision-making and process improvements within the organization.

Qualifications

Junior Level (EIT / AScT Eligible)

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering OR Electrical Engineering Technologist Diploma from a recognized institution.
• Eligible for registration as an EIT (Engineers & Geoscientists BC) OR AScT (Applied Science Technologist & Technicians BC - ASTTBC).
• Familiarity with industrial control panel design and CAD software (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN preferred).
• Understanding of PLC programming or wiring (preferred but not required).

Intermediate Level (P.Eng. Eligible / AScT Registered - Technologist)

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering OR Electrical Engineering Technologist Diploma.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation OR AScT certification (or eligible for registration).
• 3+ years of experience in electrical/controls engineering or industrial applications.
• Experience with EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, Microsoft Office, and industrial machine design.
• Working knowledge of power distribution systems up to 4160V is an asset.

Senior Level (P.Eng. Required / Senior Technologist - AScT)

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering OR Electrical Engineering Technologist Diploma.
• Registered as a P.Eng. (EGBC) OR AScT (ASTTBC).
• 10+ years of experience in industrial electrical engineering or controls design.
• Proficiency with power system analysis tools (ETAP, SKM, EasyPower).
• Expertise in power distribution (120V to 25kV), electrical protection, and arc flash studies.
• Experience working with Canadian Electrical Code, NFPA, and international standards (NEC, IEC is a plus).

Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead the technical execution, quality, and success of each project.
• Ensure efficiency and effectiveness of personnel assigned to projects.
• Support project management processes to meet objectives and timelines.
• Provide mentorship and coaching to team members for both technical execution and project workflows.
• Design EIC systems for new (greenfield) and existing industrial applications.
• Utilize engineering tools and software to validate electrical systems.
• Develop and modify design drawings using AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical.
• Prepare technical documentation to support designs, work plans, and completed tasks.
• Oversee and/or conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) in-office or at client sites, following documented test plans.
• Perform supervision and commissioning services at client sites as required, which may involve work outside of standard hours, including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.
• Maintain clear and effective communication with clients regarding project progress, ensuring alignment with project goals and QCA’s best interests.
• Travel to client sites as required for meetings, inspections, or execution of work.
• Manage time allocations efficiently and provide feedback to project managers.
• Provide work effort estimates to management.
• Submit timesheets and work comments weekly in accordance with management deadlines.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligible for registration.
• 5+ years of experience in electrical/controls engineering or industrial applications.
• Experience with EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, Microsoft Office, and industrial machine design.
• Working knowledge of power distribution systems up to 4160V is an asset.

Duties and Responsibilities

·         Design and engineer electrical power systems for industrial applications, ensuring compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) or National Electrical Code (NEC), depending on the project location.

·         Develop single-line diagrams, protection schemes, and equipment layouts for medium/low-voltage power distribution systems, including switchgear, motor control centers (MCCs), and variable frequency drives (VFDs).

·         Perform power system studies using ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower, including:

o   Load flow analysis

o   Short circuit calculations

o   Arc flash hazard assessments (CSA Z462/NFPA 70E)

o   Protective device coordination

·         Specify and evaluate electrical equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, and relays, ensuring compatibility with both Canadian or U.S. market requirements.

·         Prepare cable schedules, conduit routing plans, and grounding designs.

·         Review and approve vendor drawings, ensuring adherence to project specifications and regulatory requirements.

·         Conduct commissioning activities, including Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and on-site supervision.

·         Provide technical guidance on hybrid systems integrating renewable energy sources (solar, wind) into industrial power grids.

·         Collaborate with project managers, designers, and clients to ensure deliverables align with timelines and budgets.

·         Support proposal development by estimating labor, materials, and compliance costs for cross-border projects.

·         Liaise with utilities (e.g., grid operators) regarding metering, interconnection, and power quality requirements.

·         Travel for client site visits, commissioning, or troubleshooting.

Qualifications

·         Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Systems from an accredited institution.

·         Professional Designation:

o   Registered as a P.Eng. with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) or eligible for registration.

o   U.S. Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is a plus.

·         10+ years in industrial electrical design, including hands-on work with medium/low-voltage systems.

·         Expertise in power analysis software (ETAP, SKM, EasyPower) for studies such as harmonic analysis, voltage drop, and transient stability.

·         In-depth knowledge of CEC, NEC, IEEE, and NFPA standards (IEC 60909 knowledge is advantageous).

·         Proven track record in cross-border projects (e.g., mining, manufacturing, oil & gas sectors) an asset.

·         Familiarity with U.S. federal and state regulations (OSHA, NERC) impacting industrial power systems.

Skills & Competencies

·         Ability to interpret and apply CEC Section 36 (High-Voltage Installations) and NEC Article 490 (Equipment Over 1,000V).

·         Strong analytical skills for fault current calculations, relay settings, and ground grid design (IEEE 80).

·         Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical or SolidWorks Electrical for drafting power schematics.

·         Excellent communication skills to effectively communicate with multiple stakeholders.

·         Valid passport for occasional U.S. site visits.

Education and Experience:

• 3 to 5 years of relevant work experience; degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution

• 3 to 5 years experience in PLC programming preferred Rockwell 

• Good understanding of networking and Switches an asset 

• Wonderware HMI Experience

• Flexible, able to work on night shift or on-call

• Strong technical documentation writing skills

• Experience working on medium and large-scale projects

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills

• Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently and collaboratively
